If it is true then that means there are only 45 days a year where there isn’t enough sun to go around. It sounds about right if you’ve ever been to region and now it’s been confirmed by the Meteorological Agency of Spain that the Costa del Sol really is the sunniest spot in Spain.

The agency have said that the Costa del Sol welcomes 2,905 hours of sunshine each year, which is over 100 hours more than the Canary Islands, the second sunniest space in Spain.

The Costa del Sol is a big place though. Many who have been to Gibraltar have seen enough overcast days to doubt the findings. The size of the Costas means that there is some difference in particular areas. Malaga is officially the sunniest place in the whole of Spain as it welcomes over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and a fantastic place to live.

Coming in close behind Malaga is Granada, with 2,917 hours of sunshine, and Almería which sees over 2,990 hours of sunshine year-round. Malaga also won an award for finest climate in Spain. They were praised by the agency for their mild winter, mild minimum temperatures, and their moderate summers influenced by the sea.

The average annual temperature of Malaga is a lovely 18.5 degree Celsius. It goes up to the still-manageable 25.4 Celsius in August. Rainfall is very low in the region with only 469.2mm falling on average each year. It’s official that Malaga may very well be the best place in Spain to live with 3,000 hours of sunshine and light wind to stay cool.

A survey conducted earlier this year also saw Malaga rated as the most satisfactory place in Spain to live. No wonder Andalucía and southern Spain is the first choice on northern Europeans lips that want a better quality of life and live in the sun.

Data released this week shows that Spain is set for one of their biggest years for wine production with Spain set to make over 50 million hectolitres of wine this year. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what a hectolitre is. To put it simply one hectolitre is the same as 100 litres.

So that makes 50 million hectolitres a heck of a lot of wine.

But why is Spain producing so much wine? It’s believed by the associates and bodies of grape growers and wineries in Spain that the September harvest will be a particularly bountiful one. It’s even being suggested that there could be enough grapes harvested to surpass the old 52.5 million hectolitre record set a few years ago in 2013.

The relatively mild and wet winter and spring, followed by the intense heat of the summer, has led to a great crop this year. There has also been very little crop disease in Spain this year outside of a few incidents of mildew and other problems in Huelva, Galicia and Jerez. The majority of the wine will be coming from the hinterlands of Castilla-La Mancha however and the conditions there are said to be great for wine.

The Castilla-La Mancha isn’t the only place expecting a bumper crop though. Extremadura, Valencia, Ribera del Duero and La Rioja are also expecting great crop numbers.

The boost has also been helped by an increase in how many grapes are being grown overall. The demand for Spanish wine is on the up and wineries are responding by growing more grapes. While the domestic demand for Spanish wine is around 10 million hectolitres there’s little doubt that the increase in foreign demand could see well over 50 million hectolitres produced this year.

Another reason for the increase in Spanish production is that around half of all the wine Spain produces goes to wineries in France and Italy. The wine is then mixed with the wine in these countries and labelled as wine from there to sate the demands of people who still insist that the best wine is French and Italian; not even realising they’re purchasing Spanish!

Spain is still happy with this though because it means that almost all the wine made in Spain gets sold even if it isn’t labelled as Spanish wine. Even though Spain can’t officially take the credit for it everyone the world over is enjoying some of the best wine in the country; whether they realise it or not.

As per a recent survey conducted by HSBC Expat, Spain stands at the top of the list of how responsive a country is to make guests feel at home when they visit it.

Named as the Expat Explorer Survey, it took the opinion of nearly 22,000 people from all over the globe and asked them to rate their country of residence on how friendly and warm the locals have been ever since the time they have started living in the respective country.

However, the shocking and least expected country, Bahrain, topped the list with nearly 2/3^rd of the people saying that they as expats have felt very comfortable and welcome in Bahrain. India took the second position, while Malaysia stood third. The top spots were taken by far Eastern countries predominantly, leaving only Mexico, Russia and Spain as exceptions.

The only European country to feature in this list was Spain, which had a score of 56%, well over the global average of 48%, which clearly indicates its ability to be warm and welcome to expats despite the turbulence as far as immigration is concerned, prevails across Europe.

The survey also indicated that due to the advent of social media platforms and telecommunications in Spain, people are able to connect better and has helped expats significantly when they plan to settle in Spain. The sizeable community of expats in Spain also reflects how welcoming and friendly Spain is for expats from all over northern Europe. Most of the expats stay in the Costa del Sol region and the British and northern European have been able to settle easily in this region in comparison to any other country or region in Europe with Spain adapting to their new neighbours with even having films in English at the cinemas accompanied with a whole host of amenities in English that help the British and northern Europeans feel at home.
